Images: Citing Use of Images

A guide to finding copyright free images and how to cite them.

Citing In a Research Paper

Images should be cited in text and in the references list according to the style of your paper format. Our Citation Styles Guide provides guidance to specific citations.

Images should be cited in-text and on the references page using the proper citation style for whatever format you are working in. For more information on specific formats, check out our Citation Styles Guide

Citing in Presentation Slides

Images in Powerpoint presentations should be cited or attributed using the same guidelines as a paper. If you are working within a format (APA, MLA, Chicago), you should include a full citation in that format below the image. Alternatively, you can add a footnote labeling each image (for example, "Image 1") and create a reference slide at the end of your presentation with corresponding image numbers and full citations.
