Reading Lists Guide for Faculty

A helpful guide to creating reading lists for faculty.

What is Course Reading Lists and Why Use It?

Course Reading Lists (formerly Leganto) is a service the Library offers that enables you to easily create, maintain, evaluate, and share reading lists used by your courses. Reading lists can be added to Canvas courses, or you can get a direct link to your list that can be added to your syllabus.

You can assemble materials of all types into your reading list -- physical books, ebooks, journal and newspaper articles, websites, and streaming media. You can build this list by yourself or collaborate with your subject librarian.

Why use Course Reading Lists?

  • Save students money by using items already owned or licensed by the Library;
  • Save students time with an easy to use one-stop shop for articles, books, websites, magazines, newspapers, videos, and more;
  • Track student engagement with usage statistics on the items in your reading lists;
  • All efforts are made by library staff to make readings accessible to screen readers with optical character recognition (OCR)
  • Easily reuse and revise course reading lists each semester;
  • Comply with copyright guidelines, with the Library paying copyright fees if needed.

Best Practices for Course Reading Lists

Here are tips from your friendly librarians:

  • Please plan ahead and allow 3-5 business days for your reading list to be processed. Additional time will be required if library staff have to purchase, digitize, or otherwise obtain access to requested materials.
  • Please read the copyright section in this guide so that you understand what you can legitimately use in your course.
  • Course Reading Lists should not be used solely as an alternative to students purchasing textbooks. If an electronic version is not available, Library staff will digitize an amount that falls within fair use.
  • Always link to articles located in library databases or on the Internet rather than downloading and posting them in Canvas or Course Reading Lists.
  • Please do not scan and post PDFs yourself; let Library staff scan things!
  • You cannot post materials you have obtained through interlibrary loan or another institution. If you want to use material not owned by St. Kate's, contact your subject librarian. We will obtain articles and add OCR (which makes them accessible to screen readers).
  • If you need streaming media for your course that we don't own, contact your subject librarian. Please plan ahead as acquiring streaming rights is a time-intensive process. Due to the expense of streaming media licensing, we cannot guarantee that every item requested will be purchased.

How Do I Get Started?

There are three ways to set up a reading list:

  • You can add the Reading List module to your Canvas course and then populate it. Start with Step 1 on the left.
  • The Library can set up the reading list, give you a permalink to it, and then you can populate it. Start with Step 2 on the left.
  • You can contact your subject librarian and ask them to duplicate a list from a previous course.

Troubleshooting Access Issues

Issues accessing a citation or a reading list:

If you or your students are having difficulty accessing library-owned material or the full list, it is either a browser issue or we have temporarily lost access. Try clearing your cache or switching to another browser first. If problems persist, contact your subject librarian. If you or your students are using a Mac, we suggest using Firefox as your browser as both Safari and Chrome are more prone to issues.
