AI for Students Guide: AI Tools @ St. Kate's

Effective and ethical use of AI tools for research and learning

How can an AI Tool be useful to me as a student?

Generative AI tools can offer benefits to students through personalized learning, increased efficiency, and assistance to those with different learning abilities, linguistic backgrounds, or accessibility needs. Here are some common usages of gen AI:

  • Narrowing topics for a research paper
  • Brainstorming keywords to be used in library databases
  • Creating outlines for papers and presentations
  • Correcting grammatical and writing errors
  • Summarizing text
  • Creating flash cards, quizzes, and other study aids
  • Translating text into different languages
  • Assisting with literature reviews
  • Writing and debugging computer code
  • Creating images, videos, and data visualizations.

To use an AI tool effectively, you'll need to know how to create good prompts (see the Crafting Prompts page for more information).

AI Tool for Research

Consensus Banner

Consensus is an AI search engine for scientific and academic research. It searches over 200 million academic papers and uses language models to help you find, understand, and synthesize academic literature faster. The goal of Consensus is to present users with research that is as relevant to their query as possible, in addition to academic literature that is scientifically sound.

The company pledges to never use user data to train its systems, nor share user data with third parties. This policy reflects Consensus’ desire to protect the privacy of its users' information. St. Kate's has a one-year, free trial to Consensus

What are the uses of Consensus?

Simplifying Research Using prompts, users can search digital databases for information on an assortment of topics.
Summarization Consensus can summarize text, reports, or research.
Locating Key Concepts Consensus can locate and extract key concepts from research papers. This capability ensures that users can focus on the most essential information without having to sift through a lot of data manually.
Streamlining the Creation of Citations Consensus allows users to create drafts that include citations from studies, saving them time and effort.

How does Consensus Work?

Consensus is intended to make the process of finding peer-reviewed literature more efficient. Instead of delivering a list of links like a traditional search engine, Consensus instantly extracts contrasting or supporting evidence directly from academic papers with a single search.

By clicking on a finding, you will be directed to the abstract of a paper with an option to view the full text, if available.

To locate this research, Consensus scans a large body of papers into its digital repository, and seeks to match your search query against the titles and abstracts of each paper in its catalog. This means that when you enter keywords into the Consensus search bar, the AI retrieves research from a vast collection of articles with terms that match the wording in your search.

To ensure that the research it presents you with is as relevant to your search query as possible, the Consensus AI algorithm ranks the papers it retrieves based on evaluations of relevance as well as using quality indicators such as:

  • Publication date
  • Citation count
  • Journal reputation and impact
