Research Services Graduate Assistant Job Description (filled for the 2025-26 academic year)

The purpose of the Research Services Graduate Assistant (GA) position is to provide reference service to the St. Kate's community, and to facilitate a professional-level working/learning experience for the graduate student. The Research Services Graduate Assistant will be mentored by, and work alongside, the St. Kate's research and instruction (R & I) librarians.

GAs work at a combined service point located at the Library's front desk, and will be responding to research and circulation inquiries.

  • 15-19 hours per week; some in-person, weekday shifts are required
  • $16.75 per hour, plus sick leave 
  • Start date is approximately August 14 to allow for training before Fall semester begins.
  • The position lasts for no more than one year.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist students, faculty, and staff with research needs, including citation questions, by staffing our virtual chat service and library front desk.
  • Staff at least one shift for the 24/7 global cooperative chat service.
  • Create and edit online research guides and tutorials using LibGuides, Rise 360, etc.
  • Create postings for the Library's social media platforms and website.
  • Design book displays, and assist with library events and community outreach activities on campus.
  • Collaborate with a librarian in teaching research skills in Core courses.
  • Assist with circulation tasks as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned, depending on the Library’s needs and the assistant’s interests and skills.  

Required Qualifications

  • Must have completed LIS 7040 Information Access Services by the beginning of the assistantship.
  • Must be able to work 2-3 days in-person at the library front desk (Monday - Friday 11 am to 3 or 4 pm); plus additional off-desk and virtual chat hours.
  • Must be adaptable, and self-motivated with a growth mindset.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Excellent computer and technology troubleshooting skills.
  • Must be a quick learner capable of taking initiative, working independently, and collaboratively with staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with video creation software or LibGuides.
  • Strong interest in academic librarianship and/or information literacy (on the academic libraries pathway).
  • Experience and/or interest in instruction is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with marketing, outreach or graphic design.
  • Priority will go to students who are available for more than one semester, and who have not had academic library work experience.

Collections Graduate Assistant Job Description (currently filled)

The purpose of the Library Collection Services Graduate Assistant position is to provide professional-level support in building, maintaining, and making accessible library collections to our campus community as well as to create a hands-on learning experience for the graduate student.

The person in this position will learn about and work with many library systems including; Integrated Library System (ILS) Alma/Primo from Ex Libris, EZproxy (OCLC), Central Discovery Index (Alma), OCLC Connexion, SUSHI (usage gathering) and other integral aspects of library collections and systems work.

  • 10-20 hours per week, depending upon availability (in person, daytime hours during the week are required)
  • $16.25 per hour, plus sick leave

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Library Collections team using Alma, the Ex Libris ILS, in various areas including:
    • acquisitions
    • cataloging
    • e-resource management
    • serials
  • Copy cataloging of print materials
  • Activating and troubleshooting e-resources
  • Adding and updating license information in Alma
  • Verifying holdings data for serials subscriptions
  • Doing data clean up projects
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have taken or are currently taking LIS 7030 Organization of Knowledge or can demonstrate equivalent experience
  • A strong interest in systems librarianship
  • Excellent technical/computer skills and a willingness to learn
  • Ability to follow through with repetitive tasks
  • Strong attention to detail
