Reading Lists Guide for Faculty

A helpful guide to creating reading lists for faculty.

How Do I Get a List?

There are three ways to set up a reading list:

  • You can add it the Reading List module to your Canvas course following the directions below, and then use Steps 2 and 3 on this guide to add materials to it;
  • The Library can set up the reading list, give you a permalink to it, and then you can use Steps 2 and 3 on this guide to add materials to it;
  • You can contact your subject librarian and ask them to duplicate a list from a previous course.

Add Your Course Reading List to Canvas

To add a Course Reading List to your Canvas course, follow these steps:

1) Click Reading List to launch the Reading List tool.

**If you do not see Reading List in your Canvas menu, select Settings from the menu, click on the Navigation tab, drag/drop Reading List into the course navigation list, and hit Save at the bottom of the page. Reading List should now appear in your course navigation list on your Canvas course page.

2) Click CREATE NEW LIST to create the course reading list.

3) Give the list a title (it should autofill to match Canvas) and click the NEXT button.

4) If you wish to organize by weeks, you can choose that option now, then click CREATE LIST. You can change this later, if desired.
